
Course Aim(s)
• To raise awareness of how parents/carers can raise their own and children's value of reading and love of books.
• To engage the parent/carers in their children’s learning and raise their confidence in order for them to support their child – specifically with phonics and reading comprehension.
• To provide the parents/carers with activities and games that they can do at home to support and enhance their child's reading.
• To enhance parents/carers' functional skills, that will improve everyday life such as communication, listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as their well-being.
• To offer parents/carers' extended learning opportunities via Independent Home Learning and via Information, Advice and Guidance, to develop their self-esteem and encourage aspiration.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course learners will be able to:
1. I am aware of different learning styles and can explain at least 3 different games/activities to promote them.
2. I can pronounce the taught letter sounds and can model segmenting and blending of words with my child and can name 3 strategies to support them when decoding longer words.
3. I am aware of the red/tricky words that my child needs to learn by sight and can name 3 strategies to support my child to learn them.
4. I can ask a variety of open-ended questions to develop my child's comprehension of what they are reading and can give 3 examples in how I have I done this.
5. I can see a task through and complete the course challenge of making a story sack for my child.
